RESEARCH FEES

ANCESTRAL RESEARCH

The rate for researching ancestors through the records at New Register

House is £9 per half hour, with a minimum of one hour's research.

In addition to this, there is also a charge for access to the

ScotlandsPeople Centre which is £10 per day, plus travel costs

(£20 per day for Edinburgh, £10 for Glasgow).

A deposit will be asked for in advance to cover the cost of the pass, expenses

and one hour's research, and this can be paid through PayPal.

Upon completion of the set task, the results will be e-mailed to you with proposed

recommendations for follow up work, as well as an invoice for the balance. If at this point

you do not wish to go further, the results will be collated into an attractive family

history report and printed family tree (drawn up on Family Tree Maker), and if

required, the research can be backed up electronically onto a CD with a GEDCOM file

(a standard genealogical file format that can be read by most family tree

computer programmes).

If you do wish to continue beyond this stage, production of the final report will be

held back until the research has been completed.

DESCENDANCY RESEARCH

Efforts to trace descendants of a particular ancestor will also be charged at a rate

of £8 per half hour (one hour minimum), plus relevant expenses (as above).  If a

connection can be found to the modern day, details of descendants will be sourced

but no contact made without your prior approval and agreement.

PHOTOCOPIES of ENTRIES

My standard method of working is to transcribe the records relevant to your tree. Should

you wish copies of relevant entries, New Register House normally charges 50p per

photocopy of a digital entry (with some Minor Records charged at £2.50). These costs

would be passed onto you as an additional expense.

Bizarrely, photocopies can only be obtained at NRH for statutory records between

the following dates:

Births 1855 - 1905

Marriages 1855 - 1930

Deaths 1855 - 1955

Statutory records after the dates noted above have to be ordered as official

extracts, at a cost of £8. I have no idea why NRH have set such arbitrary

dates, but I am afraid that those are the rules at present!

ADVANCED RESEARCH

If you want to go further and understand the context of why some of your ancestors were

in the places they were in, learning more about their jobs and social environment,

I can find out the truth for you. There are many  sources that can be pursued in

Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Perth and elsewhere in the country which tie directly into

Scottish family research, including military records, criminal investigations

and prosecutions, kirk session records, cemetery records and specific archive

collections to name but a few.

All rates will be discussed in advance with you, usually on the basis of £9 per half hour
(plus expenses). The minimum charge will be for one hour's research.

Upon completion of the agreed task, suggestions will be offered on how you may
wish to proceed in the future with further work, either through me, or by yourself
(if by then you have developed the genealogy bug!).
